Time seemed to slow down as she approached me, my attention fixed on her. Squatting down, she tentatively reached out her hand just below my chin, showing no signs of aggression. I lowered my body and nudged her hand with my head for her to pet me. She did, her hands gently caressing me, just the way I liked it.
“Oh! Guess you're the lucky one!” a dog exclaimed, happy for me. The lady said something and handed a few papers to the girl who was petting me. Meanwhile, someone picked up my bed and leash, just like they did for every dog who left the pet store.
I am going to leave the pet store. The realization hit hard. I would have to leave all my dog friends behind.
But alas, this was the only opportunity for me to see the rest of the world, and losses are inevitable when making decisions.
So, I walked willingly out of the dog room I had lived in my whole life, ready to step into the strange new world with my new companion.
“I hope to see you again someday!” I barked joyfully to the other dogs, who barked back in agreement.
The pet store’s bell jingled, the door opened, and with my new friend beside me, I pranced out into the world, yipping with excitement.
