Run to safety under the forest canopy

CRACK! SIZZLE!

Two new monsters emerge into the sky, one green and long, and the other gold and loud.

My instincts kick-in and I run as fast as I have ever. My collar, my leash, and my bed were all left behind in the house as I ran into the forest below its safe canopy. Still, I kept my eyes on the monsters in the sky and ran deeper into the forest, fearing they might catch me and torture me even more.

I kept sprinting until the crackling and bellowing of the monsters stopped; they had been defeated.

I pant and slowly collapse down onto the cold concrete sidewalk, staring into the mysterious dark patch of tall pines and ivy plants pooling onto the ground. Though unaware of where I am, I know that I am very far from my dear owner.

Without the sun shining, warming my fur, I shiver as I pace around. A rustling sound from the pond distracts me from my hopeless search. Had the monster come down from the sky? I bark as I lower myself into my defense and attack position.

Quack.

Oh, it is just a duck. I straighten up to walk towards the duck, which has its own family.  The family preens and wobbles together as they walk up onto the land, settling down to sleep. I follow their cue, trying to imagine that I am in a secure place, protecting me like a fortress as I plop down on the solid dirt.

The next day, I wake up groggy from a restless, worried sleep. I stretch and watch the already swimming ducks staring at me. Seeing them side by side and feathers brushing each other, I feel a pang of jealousy and homesickness. I whined to the ducks, hoping that they could understand me, but all I got were questioning quacks. I sigh as I climb my way out of the pond bank.

Staring at the blank grass hills, I wondered, Where should I go now?
